Parashat Balak The first page contains the image of Balaam holding up his astrolabe as he was asked by Balak to curse Israel. (Numbers 22: 5-6): Balaam the prophet (with the word parashah inscribed on his sleeve) is standing wearing a long robe and holding a round blue astrolabe with red stars, perhaps alluding to the late legend that he was one of three seers (or magicians, according to James) who prophesied that Moses would destroy Egypt. Astronomers holding up astrolabes in this attitude are known during the Middle Ages, some in earlier Hebrew illuminated manuscripts. The entire parashah spans three leaves (folios 90-92).
Leaf size is approximately 320 x 262mm (12.5 x 10in)
